According to the emergency services, the 64-year-old Pole was able to support himself with his arms on the shaft and thus slow his fall. The 40-year-old farm owner immediately alerted the St. Marien and Weichenstetten fire brigades and the rescue services.
Specially equipped height rescuers were able to free the man from his predicament. The well technician was accessible during the rescue operation, which lasted around 40 minutes. However, he was hypothermic and, after first aid by the emergency doctor, was taken to the Kepler University Hospital by rescue helicopter.
The exact cause of the accident is unclear. What is certain is that the safety device fitted by the worker himself had come loose. The 64-year-old had worn a climbing harness and was secured to a forklift fork with a shackle, a carabiner and a tension belt. The fork in turn was mounted on the rear of a tractor parked next to the well.
