Asylum referendum: MFG wants at least 100,000 signatures

“Stop the flood of migration”: The MFG Upper Austria specified their ideas for the referendum under this title today. The influx of “economic migrants under the guise of humanitarian aid” must end, said MFG Upper Austria party leader Joachim Aigner. Entitled people seeking protection should continue to receive help. At the same time, the integration of recognized refugees and legal immigrants should be improved.

The MFG has created nine demands for this – from active and continuous protection of Austria’s borders to accelerated asylum procedures, speedy repatriation and better distribution of refugees within the EU. In addition, no asylum procedure should start without verifiable information about the origin and identity of the asylum seekers.

All of these demands were also made in part by other parties, said MFG club chairman Manuel Krautgartner and MFG MP Dagmar Häusler. “But they are not implemented” – not even if the respective party is in government responsibility. “That’s why we have now chosen the means of a referendum,” say the MFG politicians. MFG Country Manager Aigner called at least 100,000 signatures the goal. The referendum has already been registered with the Ministry of the Interior, and according to Aigner, the first declarations of support could be made shortly.

“We are absolutely stable”

Recently, the resignation of all seven MFG mandates in the municipal council of Waidhofen an der Ybbs caused a stir. Prior to this, central players in the MFG (such as Gerhard Pöttler from Salzburg), but also individual municipal councilors in Upper Austria (e.g. in Steyr and Wels) had turned away from the MFG.

Does the MFG crumble? No, he does not see this danger, said MFG club boss Krautgartner to an OÖN question “We are absolutely stable.” Everyone is free to leave MFG. He has no problem with that, said party leader Aigner. “What I don’t understand is when you keep the mandate as a chair gluer and continue to collect tax money without passing on the values of MFG.”
