The richest duck in the world has a birthday

Scrooge McDuck, as he is called in the American original, appeared for the first time in December 1947 in the comic “The Test of Courage” by legendary Disney artist Carl Barks. Unlike Donald Duck himself, he’s a Barks invention.

Based on the Christmas story “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, the rich duck was sitting alone in her manufacturer’s villa and grumbled: “Horrible party!” The original name is a bit more obvious than the German translation. The name variation McDuck is intended to evoke the (unfair) cliché of the miserly Scotsman, the first name to the famous Dickens character who receives nightly creepy visitors and becomes a better person.

The German translation is more subtle: the Merovingian royal name Dagobert roughly translates to “shining like the day”. And isn’t the blinking of the coins a central motif for the successful tycoon? Don’t the dollar signs sparkle in his eyes when he smells gold?

How much money does Uncle Scrooge have?

How much money does Uncle Scrooge have? There are always new answers to this in the comics that are published in German by Egmont Ehapa Media. This probably also has something to do with inflation since 1947. Some time ago, the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” quoted from the biography “Uncle Dagobert – His Life, His Billions” by the cartoonist Don Rosa: According to this, Dagobert’s fortune is 5 fantastic billion and 9 trillion thalers as well as 16 kreuzers.

In other adventures it is sometimes 13 trillion, 224 trillion, 567 billion, 778 million talers and 16 kreuzers or 5 pimpillions, 396 trip trillions, 83 fantastic billions and 16 kreuzers. But since no one knows how much a fantastic billion euros is, Disney can tell us a lot anyway. In any case, Dagobert has enough coins and bills for a full bath in the money store, unless the tank crackers have just plundered everything again.

At least since the first “Funny Paperback” entitled “The Columbus Butterfly” from 1967, fans have known that Dagobert has little sense for the wonders of nature, but great sensuality when it comes to money. His treasure hunts and strange investments keep lazy Donald and his brave nephews in danger. But when he has to choose between mammon and human life, the whiskered old man in top hat, frock coat and spats always chooses family.

The editor-in-chief of the “Humorous Paperback” (LTB), Marko Andric, says: “Money alone doesn’t make you happy, not even Scrooge McDuck. Even if he enjoys good business, thaler baths and his money vault, he proves in many stories that But family is the most important thing to him. Otherwise, would he entrust Donald with every job and invite him and his nephews on every adventure?” From time to time the miser even gives the little ones money for an ice cream.

A “Micky Maus” magazine for the anniversary was released in stores just in time. “There Dagobert Duck proves that he is also very familiar with the world of cryptocurrencies. In addition, a test reveals whether you have what it takes to become a billionaire yourself,” as the publisher reports. The 75th birthday of the successful businessman will also be celebrated in LTB 566 with festive stories from December 6th.
