The fresh wind that blew across the ski slopes of the Zwieselalm had a downside. Skiers from all over Upper Austria came to Gosau again on Sunday to take advantage of the opportunity to make the first turns of the new season. But the Föhn gnawed at the already meager snow cover.
“We’re just hoping for a few cooler days. But the most important thing is that the people are happy. And we’re satisfied with the start,” says Rupert Schiefer, Managing Director of the Seilbahnholding Oberösterreich. After the start on the Höss in Hinterstoder was postponed from December 2nd to 8th, the Dachstein-West ski area started the new season on Saturday as Upper Austria’s pioneer.
- Start of the season in the Upper Austrian ski areas: The ski area Dachstein West has been at least partially open since December 3rd. Otherwise, a bit of patience is required: In Hinterstoder and on the Wurzeralm the lifts are supposed to run from Thursday, December 8th. Also on that Hochficht and on that starstone the start of the new season is planned for this day. On the fireball it starts on December 17th, on the Krippenstein the first turns will take place on December 24th.
Opening steps on December 8th
There were 800 who were chauffeured by two lifts up to an altitude of 1600 meters. On Sunday around 600 skied over the open slope.
“We deliberately decided against a wider opening. With more intensive snowmaking, a little more would certainly have been possible. But with this general weather situation, we simply have to leave the church in the village,” says Schiefer. The next step is already planned for the public holiday, Thursday, December 8th: The small ski link to Annaberg should then guarantee more kilometers of slopes.
The Immaculate Conception should also be a holiday for the lift operators in the Mühlviertel and in the Stodertal: on the Hochficht, on the Wurzeralm and in Hinterstoder, speed will be picked up – provided the snow conditions allow progress. At least from Friday it looks like support from above. Read here how the weather in Upper Austria will continue in the coming days and what the chances of fresh snow are:
