The government led by the conservative Rishi Sunak has already announced that is training 2,000 people, including military personnelyouar, officials and volunteers, to work in strategic sectors as “one of the available options”, although he pointed out that a decision on a possible military intervention had not yet been made, the news agency reported Europe Press.
Zahawi suggested to the workers of the National Health Service (NHS)a sector that will join the strike, that it is the wrong time to strike because of low wages because it would help the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to divide the West in the middle of the war in Ukraine.
Zahawi told the media that the nurses should suspend the forceful measure and drop their wage demands because they risked playing into the hands of the Russian president, who, according to him, wanted to feed inflation in the West, published the British newspaper The Guardian.
“It is time to come together and send a very clear message to Mr Putin that we are not going to be divided in this way. Our message to the unions is that this is not the time to strike, it is time to try to negotiate Zahawi said.
“If you try to lower inflation it could cause higher inflation and affect the most vulnerable“added the conservative. If a negotiation is not achieved, the Government “has the right and responsibility to have contingency plans. We are considering the Army. We are considering a response with a specialized force to increase capacity“, he indicated.
For her part, the General Secretary of the nurses union Royal College of Nurses (RCN)Mr Pat Cullen said it was a “new level” for the government to “use Russia’s war in the Ukraine as justification for a real pay cut for nurses in the UK”.
“Ten days after our strike begins, I reiterate my commitment to meet with the ministers to address our conflict. Instead of negotiating with the nurses, they are choosing to strike,” she commented.
Also in response to Zahawi’s claims that the strikes are helping Putin, the head of Health for Unison (one of Britain’s largest public service unions), Sara Gorton, said the government could “easily avoid strikes” if Health Secretary Steve Barclay will start talking to unions about raising wages.
Over the next 10 days, pressure is likely to increase on the government to start wage talks.
Various strikes were called in key sectors such as transportation, health, education or deliveries and it is estimated that tens of thousands of people will join these calls to protest the increase in the cost of living.
