Citizen survey: Krems should be close to nature again

How can the Krems be made more natural, beautiful and accessible? Within a month, exactly 633 interested parties from the communities of Ansfelden, Bad Hall, Kematen, Kremsmünster, Nußbach, Piberbach, Ried im Traunkreis, Rohr and Wartberg expressed their wishes for the future of the Krems and its tributaries at www.flussdialog.at. The Ministry of Agriculture together with the state of Upper Austria called for the online survey.

“The river dialogue ‘Unsere Krems’ showed that the population is very interested in the design of our waters and would like to get actively involved,” says Minister Norbert Totschnig. “The survey results form the basis for further planning steps.”

The results in detail: 81 percent would like the habitat for animals in the water to be improved by stones or dead wood, 67 percent were in favor of restoring a near-natural river course with meanders, tributaries and floodplain landscapes. Both underline the ecological awareness of the citizens. Furthermore, 73 percent of those surveyed want more options for getting to or in the river, and 69 percent are in favor of more seating on the bank. Great importance was also attached to the issue of accessibility.

“I am particularly pleased about this clear positioning of the population for the protection and restoration of near-natural bodies of water and it shows that, in addition to the awareness of the need for sustainable use, there is also an express desire for greater consideration of ecological aspects,” says Environment and Climate Councilor Stefan Kaineder .
