Serbia fans rioted in Vienna

The defeat of Serbia at the World Cup was obviously difficult for 150 fans in Vienna to cope with emotionally: After their team was eliminated, the football supporters, many of them of Serbian origin, gathered on Saturday around 10 p.m. on Ottakringer Strasse. There they went onto the roadway and blocked it. They ignited pyrotechnics and thus triggered a large-scale police operation, as the Vienna State Police Directorate announced on Saturday.

Bottles were thrown at the first officers to get to Ottakringer Strasse. Eventually, the crowd wanted to march toward the city center. The police had to block the surrounding streets for a short time. However, officers managed to encircle the group.

The police officers then determined the identities of those present and they were reported. No one was arrested and there were no injuries.

The police operation ended around 1 a.m. on Saturday. The officers of the Ottakring city police command had received reinforcements from several emergency services from different districts, the special unit WEGA, the standby unit and the state traffic department.
