Should the British government, as previously planned, end its support for energy bills at the end of March 2023, the almost 40,000 pubs and 1,800 breweries in Great Britain would have to reckon with an average minus of 20 percent.
As the trade association British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) announced on Monday, this would mean the end for many pubs and breweries. This would have resulted from calculations commissioned by the BBPA from the consulting firm Frontier Economics. In addition, the high inflation (9.61 percent in October) is having a negative effect on customer frequency and consumer spending, the statement said. “We’re struggling with our bills, but so are our customers, so we’re being squeezed from two sides,” said Gemma Gardener, the manager of a pub in the town of Morecambe.
BBPA boss Emma McClarkin is therefore demanding a long-term guarantee from the government in London that energy costs and lease agreements are “fair and reasonable”.
