Landslide on Ischia: last missing found dead

The body was discovered near a parking lot where much of the earth in the Casamicciola part of the island had landed. The official death toll rose to 12.

The fatality is a 31-year-old who worked as a waitress. She was probably caught in the landslide while driving to work.

The Council of Ministers in Rome decided on preventive measures against natural disasters such as floods and landslides on Thursday. 350 million euros are to be made available for 139 projects for geological safety.

There is a risk of flooding, landslides and erosion in almost all of Italy and not only on Ischia with its little more than 60,000 inhabitants. 94 percent of the municipalities are at risk, said Italian civil defense chief Fabrizio Curcio. That is why more prevention is needed, and people would also have to adapt their behavior in the event of severe weather warnings.
