Those responsible in the city of Vienna want to finally put an end to the “scooter chaos” with their recently adopted tightened rules. Important cornerstones: concession awards for the rental companies, upper limits for scooter devices depending on the district, more fixed parking areas with the simultaneous establishment of restricted zones and stricter controls to prevent improper parking.
Traffic officer Deputy Mayor Martin Hajart (VP) wants to take Vienna as an example and also tighten the pace in Linz. The current code of conduct – introduced by Hajart’s predecessor Markus Hein (FP) – is not enough to get the situation under control and offers too weak a handle, the biggest problem is the “wild parking of e-scooters”.
In consultation with Mayor Klaus Luger (SP), a task force is now starting its work to develop a new set of rules. This should be available by spring. Discussions about e-scooters have a long history in the city of Linz, the most recent intensification was also under Hajart in May this year. Keywords: scooter sheriffs and no-parking zones. According to Hajart, these innovations have brought significant improvements, which should be retained and, if necessary, expanded.
It is already clear that in Linz, like in Vienna, the number of scooters will be limited in the future, and it will be the task of the working group to define the upper limit. Hajart is also in favor of fixed parking spaces in inner-city areas, where the “number of e-scooters is highest”. The “free floating” system and the arbitrary (and uncontrolled) parking of scooters would be history.
Manuel Matsche, traffic spokesman for the Linz FPÖ, calls for an ID card for e-scooter and e-bike drivers. Again and again, their users are traveling too fast, which repeatedly leads to dangerous situations, he argues in the direction of the federal government. They would have to amend the law to make such an identification requirement possible. (jp)
