Peru: Will Castillo’s removal be approved?

At this time, one of the key points focuses on the number of votes that the opposition must obtain by law to achieve the motion that will remove the Peruvian president from office: congressmen must reach 87 votes in favor, a number that opposition politicians do not have.

Of the 130 members of the unicameral Parliament of Peru, 80 would vote with the aim of approving the motion. The pro-government benches and related groups are around 50.

The “vacancy motion” is the third against Castillo in 16 months in power and is due to accusations of corruption. In March, did not reach the votes to remove him and in December 2021, Congress dismissed it before debating it.

“We propose the vacancy of the Presidency of the Republic, occupied by José Pedro Castillo Terrones for having incurred in the cause of permanent moral incapacity,” says the motion that appeals to article 113 of the Constitution of Peru.

Pedro Castillo denied corruption

Hours before the debate begins and the subsequent vote in Congress, President Pedro Castillo denied the acts of corruption for which his dismissal is being requested: “Hours after a new vacancy motion (removal) was debated against me, I I present to ratify once again that I am not corrupt nor would I ever stain the good last name of my honest parents“.

“A certain sector of Parliament had the only point on the agenda” to remove him from office, “because never accepted the results of an election“Added the president in an official announcement made this Tuesday.

Castillo emphasized the denial of the acts of corruption: “Tonight I ratify that I have never stolen a sun from my countryI am honest, a man from the country who is paying mistakes for his inexperience, but he has never stolen a sun”
