Flu wave in Austria continued to pick up speed

The number of confirmed virus detections rose from around 70 in calendar week (KW) 46 and more than 150 in the week after to around 240 cases. However, these are random samples; the actual number of cases is much higher.

The flu reporting service of the City of Vienna estimated 23,150 new cases of flu and influenza for the previous week (week 48). The week before, a smaller increase from 16,250 to 17,850 cases had been registered. However, that was also higher than the peak value of the last flu wave before Corona. The peak of the 2019/20 season in Vienna was only reached after the turn of the year in week 6 with 13,900 flu infections and cases of real flu.

As feared, the influenza hit this year much earlier and stronger than usual. In the past two winters, there was no flu wave in Austria due to the corona measures. According to MedUni Vienna, there is generally “increasing influenza virus activity” in Europe. Germany, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Russia, Turkey and Scotland in particular report widespread cases of influenza.
