Corona: Virus spread in wastewater is falling, hospital numbers are increasing

The number of reproductions derived from these samples is 1.14, well above the 1.0 mark, but “with a downward trend,” according to the Covid forecast consortium update published on Wednesday. Accordingly, in the next two weeks there will be a slight increase in bed occupancy with infected people in the normal wards and a constant utilization in intensive care.

In the previous week, the model calculators had reported a significant increase in evidence of coronavirus in wastewater in most federal states. However, the effective number of reproductions estimated on the basis of the test behavior also shows a downward trend at a value of 1.03.

At 35 percent, the variants BQ.1, BQ.1.1 and BQ.1.1.10 made up the largest proportion of the reported new infections in the penultimate calendar week (week 47). “There is still no reason to assume that the omicron subvariants mentioned lead to increased hospitalizations,” emphasize the experts from Vienna University of Technology, MedUni Vienna and Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG). Therefore, it cannot be assumed that there will be a significantly higher Covid-specific system load than in the last two waves of infection in July and October.

6,689 new infections on Wednesday

6,689 new infections were recorded across Austria the day before, the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) announced on Wednesday. This is above the average of 4,786 cases over the past seven days. A good 800 new cases were added in Upper Austria. 1,055 infected people were treated in hospitals nationwide on Wednesday morning, 103 more than a week ago. 59 affected people needed intensive care. In a daily comparison, five Covid deaths were added, so far the pandemic in Austria has claimed 21,247 lives.

The Corona Commission rated the situation for Austria as a whole on Wednesday with “low risk”. The Corona traffic light is therefore yellow-green. The federal states of Burgenland, Carinthia, Styria and Tyrol were also classified as “low risk”. In Upper Austria and Vorarlberg there is even a “very low risk” (green), while in Lower Austria, Salzburg and Vienna there is a “medium risk” (yellow).
