25 years ago, the former state women’s clinic was integrated into the Wels clinic, where a new wing for the parent-child center was built. In addition to obstetrics, neonatology for the treatment of premature babies was also established. It was also the beginning of the interdisciplinary center for women’s health.
“Back then, the aim of the parent-child center was to ensure comprehensive care for mothers before, during and after the birth, as well as optimal care for the newborn,” says Klaus Reisenberger, head of the department for gynecology and obstetrics. “This required good accessibility, an advantageous infrastructure with short distances and modern medical equipment.”
Since the merger of the Wels Hospital with the Grieskirchen site in 2008, obstetrics have been represented across all sites, and around 2,600 children see the light of day every year.
High-risk pregnancies and premature babies are cared for at the Wels site. Very small premature babies from 25 weeks of pregnancy and newborns with acute serious illnesses are treated in the intensive care unit. Newborns with minor problems such as infections, respiratory adjustment disorders, newborn jaundice, children with low birth weight and also very small premature babies who have outgrown the intensive care phase are cared for at the NIMCU (Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit).
“We are well positioned – both in terms of medical infrastructure and in terms of personnel,” emphasizes Reisenberger. He attaches great importance to regular certification, “because we ensure internally optimized processes. It is important that our patients experience security and continuity in treatment. This is shown, for example, by having a fixed contact person throughout the treatment.”
