The way for a new track and field facility is now clear

With the decision to demolish the old Linz stadium as the location for the new LASK Arena, athletics lost its most important training facility in the country in one fell swoop. As compensation, a new home was promised on the existing sports field of the diocesan college of education not far from the stadium.

After it was recently said again that the athletes would have to wait longer because the building permit issued by the city of Linz in autumn had been objected to by a property owner, the way to construction is surprisingly clear. The reason: the complaint to the regional administrative court of Upper Austria was withdrawn. Where there is no plaintiff, there is no judge – and to put it simply, no more cases for the lawyers of the State Administrative Court. So thing done.

There is little evidence as to what caused the shift in opinion. According to a broadcast by State Councilor Markus Achleitner (VP), many good discussions were held. And then the objection to the building permit was withdrawn.

So now, after a long wait, those affected, especially those responsible for the TGW Decathlon Union, have hope that things will soon get serious again. The term “soon” is relative. “The realization should be initiated as soon as possible, at the latest in the first or second quarter of 2023,” says the broadcast. In any case, Landesrat Achleitner sees himself on schedule, because the implementation of the package as compensation for the loss of the stadium was always planned by 2024.

It turned out that the prospect of the new training facility for athletics, which is to benefit the most successful LA club in Austria as well as the Olympic base and the Federal Sports Academy as well as the sports teacher training at the PH, had already been announced in November 2019 for the following year as a wish.

Around 2.5 million euros are to be invested in the PH area. A 4-lane circular track, new jumping and throwing facilities and a new adaptation of the sports field are planned. The natural facility also includes a wooden building with cloakrooms.
