Five more of the 14 people on board the open wooden boat are still being searched for, said the representative of the central government in Murcia, José Vélez, on Friday on the Cope radio station. Six of the inmates could have been rescued since the previous evening.
It was not initially known from which North African country the people had started. A walker had spotted the three dead in the water on a beach south of Murcia the day before and alerted the police. The search operation in the Mediterranean then began.
Vélez spoke of another tragedy and called for the gangs of people smugglers to finally put a stop to it. That people are putting their lives on the line gives an idea of the “level of social drama they are fleeing,” he said.
