How fast are drivers on the main square? As reported, this has been a meeting zone since the beginning of September. Where there used to be a 30 km/h limit, now only 20 km/h are allowed.
More than 3,000 cars would roll across the main square every day, with traffic peaking between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., said Vice Mayor Martin Hajart (VP), who is responsible for traffic.
More safety for all road users
There has been a mobile speedometer on the main square since the beginning of November. The data was now evaluated in detail for eight days, specifically from November 7 (from 1:12 p.m.) to November 10 (11:52 p.m.) and November 14 (10:58 a.m.) to November 17 (12:23 p.m.). Almost 25,000 vehicles were counted in the evaluation periods.
At a little less than 60 percent, the display showed less than 20 km/h, around 85 percent were slower than 25 km/h (see graphic). Seven drivers were faster than 45 km/h. In view of the figures, Hajart draws a positive balance. These would show that the meeting zone makes a significant contribution to calming people down on the main square, thereby increasing safety for all road users.
No through traffic from autumn 2024
As Hajart puts it, the encounter zone is only to be seen as an intermediate step. With the opening of the Westring Bridge to traffic, planned for autumn 2024, through traffic is to be blocked from the main square. Then two lanes are to be opened up for cyclists on the Nibelungen Bridge.
What the design of the main square should look like will be part of the city center master plan, which is to be drawn up across all departments in 2023. The ÖVP is also calling for an ideas competition, and the corresponding application has ended up in the planning committee.
The meeting zone on the main square will soon find an “imitator” in Domgasse, and further traffic calming measures in the city center are to follow, according to Hajart – always on the premise that the quality of life and traffic safety will be increased in equal measure.
