Forward coach Madlener is convinced of his eleven despite the low form

SK Forward has started winter training. Coach Daniel Madlener comes to the interview directly from a match in the self-constructed cage in the forward parking lot. Even though the autumn ended forgivingly with a win in Dornbirn, the red-whites didn’t live up to their own expectations in the first half of the season. Criticism of the coach also came from those around the team. Meanwhile, Madlener is convinced of his path.

You have now been in office for 16 months. In the spring, the team impressed with offensive football. The autumn didn’t go well. What was the issue?

Daniel Madeler: You shouldn’t forget that we had a complete upheaval in the team in the summer. Nine departures, six of them regular players. You can’t compensate for that so quickly. I underestimated that too, maybe I was too euphoric. It’s missing a few percentage points in some areas and it adds up.

A lot of new players came. Does everyone have what it takes for the 2nd league?

With our budget we can only bring in players with development potential and we don’t have the scouting to ensure that every transfer is successful. It has to be said that for some the progress is not great enough. We have to correct that now.

The upheaval in the gate was homemade. Both goalies were changed. Was that correct in retrospect?

Here, too, we brought on two people with development potential. Unfortunately, both still lack the sovereignty and consistency that is necessary. A few mistakes cost us a total of six to eight points. I don’t see either of them as a one-goal player yet. So we’re looking for reinforcements.

Rumor has it that Thomas Turner will be an issue again?

He was in conversation, would probably also be interested. But it doesn’t look as if St. Pölten will let him go.

The squad seems randomly put together. six centre-backs, just a central striker. Were there mistakes made in the transfer policy?

We saw in the fall that we still needed central defense because some players weren’t quick enough and we weren’t satisfied. Shortly before the end of the transfer, we signed David Bumberger and Nico Wiesinger, with Bumberger in particular being a great asset. In central defense something can happen on the exit side in winter, because six central defenders are too many – there’s no question about that.

With the international break, sand got into the gears of your team. The players often seemed drained and powerless. The word “overtraining” was often heard around the team.

It was definitely not overtraining, because I often saw the players lively and in great shape during the final training session on Thursdays and Fridays. Then on match day they were inhibited and without the necessary energy. But that wasn’t because of the physical. Basically it is the case that there is only further development through work, not through protection. It’s about being fit on match day. That’s what we’re working towards. It’s certainly not about beating up a player. But there is also a personal responsibility of the players to speak up when it is too much.

Striker Tobias Pellegrini had to sit out a full two weeks.

He was the only one who was probably really overtraining. We took him out again and again, reduced the load.

keyword communication. Your long speeches before each training session are said to overwhelm some young players.

First, these talks are not long, 10 to 15 minutes at most. And secondly, it’s not something that overwhelms you. Rather, it’s an offer to players to equip them with tools to help them out on the pitch. It starts with very simple things like posture. As with physical exercises or in the area of tactics, only a certain regularity is effective in the mental area.

How do you deal with criticism of yourself, your style?

I also hear voices questioning whether I’m still the right man. All I can say is that I feel good in Steyr, I accept the challenge and I’m not worried. I’m sure we’ll get back to where we were last spring. We still lack continuity. But we’ll get it.
