Average rents increased in the third quarter

Average rents in Austria rose significantly from July to September. Compared to the previous quarter, they increased by 3.1 percent to EUR 8.8 per square meter. According to Statistics Austria, this was the highest quarterly increase since the start of the time series in 2004.

The monthly average rent including operating costs was 588.3 euros per main apartment. The operating costs averaged 153.3 euros. Compared to the third quarter of 2021, the increase in average rent including operating costs was 7.0 percent. According to Statistics Austria, inflation is now also visible in higher rental costs. The rental costs are extrapolated to 1.7 million main rental apartments in Austria.

Around 399,200 households were affected by the adjustment to the benchmark rent this year. In April, this was increased by 5.9 percent. It is a legal upper limit for the main rent and affects rental apartments that were built before 1953 and for which a rental contract was fixed after February 28, 1994.
