At the beginning of the second quantum revolution, it was “remarkable how the circle began in Austria and was closed in Austria,” said the physics laureates at the presentation.
The solemn ceremony with around 1,560 invited guests began with the entry of the royal family – alongside King Carl XVI. Gustaf and Queen Silvia also Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel – and the Swedish royal song “Kungssången”. For the chairman of the Nobel Foundation, Carl-Henrik Heldin, in view of a multitude of crises and challenges such as the war in Europe, the energy crisis and climate change, “dedicated scientists who tirelessly search for the truth and push the boundaries of our knowledge” are needed. In his opening speech, he referred to the “higher goal” of the award: “The Nobel Laureates are part of a community that has changed the world in profound ways. They demonstrate the ability that we as human beings have to shape our own destiny.”
Before the award ceremony itself, “Laus Canticum” by the Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi, a work commissioned by the Nobel Foundation, was premiered. She wanted to honor the Nobel Prize winners of 2020 and 2021, who were unable to accept the award in Stockholm due to the pandemic and were therefore invited to this year’s awards ceremony.
The big day of “Mr. Beam”: Zeilinger receives the Nobel Prize
Mats Larsson, a member of the Nobel Committee for Physics at the Swedish Academy of Sciences, then paid tribute to the three physics laureates. He recalled that for the Austrian physicist and Nobel Prize winner Erwin Schrödinger, entanglement was “the characteristic feature of quantum mechanics”. Zeilinger and his team have shown “how the elusive concept of quantum entanglement can be useful. This was a giant leap from Zeilinger’s Austrian predecessor, Schrödinger, and it is remarkable how the circle started in Austria and was closed in Austria,” says Larsson . This is how “the second quantum revolution began”.
Shortly before 4:30 p.m., the physicists were the first to receive the insignia associated with the award from the king: the Nobel Prize medal and certificate. The presentation takes place in alphabetical order according to strict protocol: After receiving the certificate and medal, the award winners shook hands with the king and bowed three times: once to the king, then to the academy and finally to the audience.

Aspect, Clauser, and Zeilinger were recognized “for experiments with entangled photons, evidence of violation of Bell’s inequalities, and pioneering quantum information science.” They share the Nobel Prize, which is endowed with ten million Swedish crowns (around 900,000 euros).
After the physicists, the award winners for chemistry, medicine, literature and economics will be honored before the ceremony ends at around 5.15 p.m. with the Swedish anthem.
