In a district of Dresden, the body of a woman was discovered in an apartment building in the morning. It is said to be the mother of the suspect (40).
The area around the Altmark-Galerie shopping center was affected by the police action and was evacuated. The famous Striezelmarkt Christmas market remained closed. Dresden city center should be avoided. The emergency services were in telephone contact with the man.
The suspect, whose mental behavior is said to have been very conspicuous, died while the hostages were being freed. “We are most likely to assume a mental illness,” said the police. According to the police, the hostages – an employee and a child – remained unharmed.
