Marriage to Santa Claus is frustrating. He is constantly moving around the houses with Knecht Ruprecht and his elves. In doing so, he forgets his wife, who, after all these miserable years, no longer wants to beg for attention. At the Linzer Schauspielhaus she settles accounts with her busy husband Nikolaus.
It was a rousing show, the musical star Daniela Dett delivered on Friday evening at the Christkindl Gala of the OÖ Nachrichten. In the role of Mrs. Santa Claus, she let the sparks fly – and made the audience in the sold-out hall smile. Born in Aussee, she was not alone in the limelight. That evening she shared the theater stage with around 90 other artists, ranging from ballet dancers to wind musicians and the choir boys. Also Governor Thomas Stelzer slipped into an unfamiliar role. He told how a little flea made Santa Claus laugh. The punchline finally put a smile on the faces of the gala visitors.
“Very emotional weeks for the Christkindl”
At the gala, to which the OÖN-Christkindl together with the Linz event agency “The Crew For You” loaded, others can enjoy it too. Those fellow human beings who are going through difficult times because they got into trouble as a result of an accident, illness or another stroke of fate. “These are demanding, very emotional weeks for the Christkindl. At the same time, it is an enrichment. We get so much more back, so much gratitude,” said OÖN Editor-in-Chief Susanne Dickstein. Together with Franz Hehenberger (“Be so free”) she was allowed to accept a 9,000 euro check. 6,300 euros will go to the Christkindl campaign of the OÖ Nachrichten, 2,700 euros will go to the development policy organization of the Catholic men’s movement, Be so free.
The OÖN Christmas campaign was launched almost six decades ago to at least take away the financial worries of needy compatriots. “Since then we have collected more than 30 million euros and distributed them in Upper Austria”, summed up OÖN editor Rudolf A. Cuturi.
This was made possible by the family of readers – private individuals, companies and associations. But the State Theater also makes a contribution with the Christkindl Gala to help those in need in the state. All participants waive payment, the net proceeds from ticket sales are donated. “This evening makes the main task of the state theater clear again,” recalled Manager Herman Schneider. “We do something for society. It makes us proud that we can be part of this project.”
A colorful programme
The benefit event has now become a tradition – and after a two-year Corona break, there was an enchanting continuation. the Advent brass band of the Lacken Music Association welcomed the gala visitors in front of the theater on the Linz Promenade with contemplative Advent carols. Before the performance gave the Chamber of Agriculture Mulled cider and young cider made by the Mistlbacher family from Leonding before the moderator duo Eric Papilaya and Karoline Ploberger the colorful stage show opened.
The Landestheater-Ensemble kicked things off Dance Linz. The four ballet couples gave exclusive insights into the modern production of “Sleeping Beauty”, which tells the story of a princess in search of freedom. With strong applause, the dancers left the stage and made room for the Innviertler Phylloxera Quartet. With three pieces, including “Es rüahrt sich ka Blattl”, Franz Bauer, Harald Wurmsdobler, Lukas Haselgrübler and Hans Stadler got their listeners into the Christmas spirit. It was a performance to pause, to slow down. The performance of the students triggered other emotions Musical Theater Academy Puchenau (MTA) out. Disguised as elves and angels, they helped Santa Claus bring joy to the poor children of this world. The young talents delighted the audience with dance and song interludes, including to “Jingle Bells”.
Mühlviertler musicians served venison ragout
That delivered an original show Alpkan-Quintet from the district of Perg. The musicians heated up the packed theater hall with trumpet, tuba, trombone, guitar and drums – and served the gala visitors a hearty delicacy with “venison ragout”. With the Linzer, founded 130 years ago Kolping Choir reverent silence returned to the stage. The singers caused goosebumps with “Signore delle crime” and “You raise me up”. As well as the zither-Virtuoso Wilfried Sharp with his ensemble of the Academy for zither and related stringed instruments: Simone Schauer played the dulcimer, Aurelia Köberl the zither and Karl Fischer the contraguitar.
The story “The Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde, brilliantly told by a castle actress, made you think Marie Luise Stockinger, who grew up in St. Florian near Linz. In addition to her, other famous Florianians performed at the Christkindl Gala. the choir boys crowned the successful evening together with the male choir. At the end, Eric Papilaya and Karoline Ploberger once again invited all the artists onto the stage to join them and the audience in singing “O you happy”. And it was there again: the goose bumps moment.
