Wels is not known as a hiking destination, more as a trade fair and shopping town. Around the town square, which is worth seeing, there are numerous historical buildings, such as the castle with the old town, the Ledererturm, the Minorite monastery, the water tower and relics of the Roman city wall. There are also some interesting museums in the city, such as the Welios and the Angerlehner Art Museum. We present two hikes. One on the outskirts of the city around Puchberg Castle, on the other we have connected two of the city hiking trails starting from the train station to form a loop.
In and outside the city gates
We begin our city hike at the train station and follow Dr.-Schauer-Straße to the Mühlbach. Along this you reach the Adlerstraße through the Fischergasse at the castle, which leads down to the banks of the Traun. Upstream, the Traunbrücke is soon reached, and over this it goes to Thalheim and in a direct line to the start of the path up to the Marienwarte. You follow the Reinberg circuit in the opposite direction.
After a few hairpin bends in the deciduous forest, you stand in front of the lookout point built in 1892, from which you can see the city and far into the country. We continue on wide forest paths, we first stay on the ridge of the Reinberg, and only after a fitness course do the signs direct us down and over the railway bridge back over the Traun. From here you follow the signs for the city hike. Through the exhibition center you come to the small, fine animal park, soon after that to the city park, and past the Welios you come back to the Mühlbach at the Ledererturm.
The water tower at the Zwinger and the Minorite monastery are the next stations. The city hiking trail continues to the castle and down to the Traun. Here we turn off and reach the town square, which with its historic facades is one of the most beautiful street squares in Austria. Via Schmidtgasse, Bäckergasse and Bahnhofstrasse you return to the main train station.
The Puchberg-Linetwald tour begins at the gates of the city in Oberthan. A varied hike that leads through forest, meadows and small villages. Halfway along the route you reach the impressive ensemble of Puchberg Castle and soon afterwards the Waldschänke inn. Passing the Scherhaufgut riding stables, you come back through the village of Katzbach to the Linetwald and to the starting point at Gasthaus Hofwimmer in Oberthan.
