Westbahn made its maiden voyage from Vienna to Innsbruck

Tyrol’s governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP) spoke of a “historic day” at a press conference on Innsbruck’s main railway. Because both the additional connections from Tyrol to Vienna, as well as the Tyrolean stops in Kufstein and Wörgl, are important building blocks in terms of “climate protection and mobility of the population,” says Mattle. Mattle was certain that this Tyrolean desire for even more mobility would also be reflected in the concrete and high Westbahn passenger numbers in the future.

“Tiroler Stubborn” has paid off

Westbahn co-owner and investor Hans Peter Haselsteiner emphasized that it was sometimes difficult to bring the Westbahn to Tyrol and thus to meet the mobility needs of the Tyroleans. “But it paid off here to have a Tyrolean stubborn head,” explained the native Tyrolean. He, too, had specific expectations of the Westbahn and its entry into the Tyrolean market: “The Vienna-Innsbruck line will be successful.”

MEP Barbara Thaler (ÖVP) again emphasized the “European component” of the new Westbahn route to Tyrol, which follows the Westbahn extension to Munich, which also took place in 2022. “All of this has to be viewed within the framework of the EU’s railway package, which has made it possible to liberalize this market,” says Thaler. In any case, this “competition” will “make the track more attractive”.

21 direct connections between Innsbruck and Vienna

Transport Provincial Councilor René Zumtobel (SPÖ) ultimately wanted to see this competition, in the Austrian case between ÖBB and Westbahn, less as a competition and more as a supplement. “With ÖBB and Westbahn together, we now have 21 direct connections between Innsbruck and Vienna,” said the former ÖBB manager. This means that the customers of the Verkehrsverbund Tirol (VVT) can be offered even more.

Westbahn customers benefit from free reservations, collection points and advantages if they own a climate ticket, explained Westbahn Managing Director Thomas Posch. “The latter can sit in Comfort Class at no extra charge,” said Posch. Florian Kazalek, also Westbahn Managing Director, also pointed out the overall high level of comfort of a Westbahn journey: “Meanwhile, the third generation and thus a highly modern vehicle is at the start”.
