Passenger died after head-on collision

The pensioner from Salzburg was on Friday evening with a 58-year-old from the Vöcklabruck district in the car from Zell am See towards Salzburg. At the height of the east portal of the Schönberg tunnel in Schwarzach in Pongau, an 80-year-old lost control of his car due to the wintry road conditions and crashed head-on into that of the 58-year-old from Upper Austria.

The senior was not injured, but the 58-year-old and his 77-year-old passenger were trapped in their vehicle and had to be rescued by the fire department. The 77-year-old from Salzburg was injured so badly that all attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful, and she succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the accident. Her companion was taken to the hospital in Schwarzach after first aid.

Both cars were totaled. Prosecutors are still investigating how the accident happened. The vehicles involved in the accident have been secured and an expert is to investigate the course of the accident. The two drivers were neither drunk nor under the influence of drugs, police said.

The Schönberg Tunnel was closed in both directions for about three hours because of the serious accident.
