In many communities there is a discussion about doing without the Christmas lights this year in view of the energy shortage and high electricity costs. In Bad Ischl, the tourism association, trade and the municipality agreed on austerity measures. “We have to make our contribution to energy-saving management,” says tourism director Jakob Reitinger. “That’s why we’re going to turn off the lights as early as Epiphany.” (They’re normally on until Candlemas, 40 days after Christmas.) “In addition, the daily hours of operation will also be reduced to 4 p.m. to 10 p.m..” Retailers asked to switch off their shop window lights earlier.
A complete renunciation of the Christmas lights is out of the question, they say. She is “essential”. But the fact that LED technology was used right from the start is now paying off. This requires much less electricity than many people think. The entire Christmas lighting consumes as much electricity per day as nine households per week for the washing machine alone, explains Reitinger. Bad Ischl has 7,800 households. Calculated with the price of electricity in July, this year’s Christmas lights cost 36 euros per day.
