“The friendships that develop while hiking and the community are the most important things,” says Hermann Lanzerstorfer from Aigen-Schlägl, leader of the Wednesday hiking group. It all started in 1993 with three hikers. “We went up the Bärenstein several times from May to the end of August,” remembers the sprightly 82-year-old, who is still leading his hike 3 years later. His wife Erna has been there from the start. As an accountant and programmer, he has always sought balance in nature. And when he’s retired, he enjoys being out and about with his hiking friends all the more.
hiking group grew
The group of hikers soon grew, and they no longer only explored their own municipal area, but also ventured into other regions. Since 2001, Hermann Lanzerstorfer has also been meticulously taking notes, and so almost 500 hikes have already been documented – not only statistically, but also visually. “We like to take photos and capture our memories that way,” says the Mühlviertler hiking professional. In this way, seven illustrated books have been created over the years, which he regularly designs for his hiking friends.
The 14 hikers also went on larger tours, nine of whom have been hiking with Lanzerstorfer for more than 25 years. The people of the Mühlviertel have already made many a hut in the mountains unsafe. The hiking boss himself has made the pilgrimage to Mariazell six times – on Shank’s pony, of course. In general, however, hikes that can be completed in one afternoon are preferred – including a stop for refreshments, of course. “Hiking without a stop is like a wedding without a bride,” Lanzerstorfer knows. In addition to the Mühlviertel, the Aigen-Schlägler Wednesday hiking tour also explores neighboring Bohemia and Bavaria. The Proksch couple is responsible for these tours.
Hiking keeps you fit and healthy
Hermann Lanzerstorfer advises hiking for health care not only to his generation, but also to younger contemporaries: “It keeps you fit and healthy and is a good balance.” In addition, wonderful friendships develop through walking together. People have been meeting for 30 years without hiking shoes, for example to celebrate birthdays.
Then there is always a long poem by hiking colleague Evelyn Haugsberger. She dedicated the most recent one to Hermann Lanzerstorfer to celebrate his 30th anniversary. “We want to say thank you to Hermann for all the trouble and the troubles…”
