Congress suspended a session due to blows between deputies

The objective of the meeting was to analyze the future of Castillo, in the midst of a suffocating climate as a consequence of the multiple demonstrations, roadblocks and airport blockades in demand of the call for elections and for the release of the deposed president.

Protests in Peru: at least two dead

Meanwhile, this Sunday the protests against the new government and the Peruvian Congress multiplied in the interior of the country, where roads and airports were blocked, demonstrators and police clashed again, and social organizations in one region called for an indefinite strike starting Monday, the local press reported.

Two people were killed this Sunday in a confrontation between police officers and demonstrators protesting against Peru’s new government in the remote city of Andahuaylas, Interior Minister César Cervantes announced on RPP radio.

“We regret the death of two people and several injured after the clashes. I urge the population to remain calm,” said the minister, shortly after the police announced the death of a protester.

Demonstrations took place in various cities in the northern and southern Andes, for the fourth consecutive day, demanding the release of former President Pedro Castillo, who was dismissed by Congress on Wednesday and has since been detained in a National Police unit in Lima.

Thousands of people mobilized through the streets of Cajamarca, Arequipa, Tacna, Andahuaylas, Huancayo, Cusco and Puno, among other regions, according to images broadcast by local television stations, the AFP news agency reported.
