However, doubts about democracy are more pronounced among the under-30s. Because only 73 percent agree, and a good quarter have doubts about democracy as an ideal. This emerges from the current democracy radar of the Austrian Democracy Lab from the University of Graz and the University for Continuing Education Krems.
4,500 people aged 14 and over have been surveyed every six months for the past ten years. “The young generation in particular has never experienced times without a functioning democracy. Democracy seems to be taken for granted today,” says project manager Katrin Prapotnik.
However, the general satisfaction with democracy among those surveyed has continued to decline. Only 58 percent are of the opinion that democracy in this country works “well” or “rather well”. This is the lowest level so far: In the summer of 2018, when the first survey was carried out, 77 percent still believed that democracy was working well or very well.
