Simon Bucher climbed out of the 25-meter pool on yesterday’s opening day of the Short Course World Championships in Melbourne with mixed feelings. On the one hand, the man from Linz improved the Austrian record over the 50 meter dolphin, his branch, first in the prelims and then in the semi-finals to 22.35 seconds. On the other hand, the 22-year-old, who came 11th overall, missed the final of the top eight by just seven hundredths. According to Bucher, he can be proud of the record, but given that the decision-making race was missed by a blink of an eye, there was no question of satisfaction. “It’s a shame, it was really close.” At the turn, he had a slight gliding phase, which could have cost seven hundredths of a second, the army athlete analyzed.
Two records right at the start of the World Championship on his branch line also mean that the form is right. Bucher has his main event on Saturday over 100 meters dolphin, over this distance he was sixth in the Long Track World Championships in Budapest in June. “If I can get through the second 50 meters at this high speed, that would be great. Then the final might be possible.”
On Wednesday and Friday he will be competing in the 4x50m mixed medley and 50m backstroke. The ASV Linz athlete is also looking forward to the relay. “We can keep up with that, I think.” Bucher is scheduled for the dolphin position, Caroline Pilhatsch for the back, club colleague Bernhard Reitshammer for the chest and Lena Kreundl for the crawl.
Kreundl’s personal best
While Reitshammer climbs onto the starting pedestal for the first time in the night, Kreundl already came in 14th over 200 meters individual medley yesterday. In 2:08.44 minutes, the native of Steyr improved her personal best by a whole 1.32 seconds. “It was a really good start to the World Cup,” said the 25-year-old, who was 1.19 seconds short of qualifying for the final.
Today is the big day of the fight “Down Under” for the Upper Austrian who emigrated to Switzerland. In addition to the medley relay, she also competes in the 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke.
Pilhatsch also failed to get past the pre-run yesterday, for which she only finished 29th over 100 meters backstroke in 59.71 seconds. “But I can draw good conclusions for the 50s,” the Styrian looked ahead to the route on which she became vice world champion in 2018.
The World Championships experienced two world records on the opening day: in the 4×100 meters, both the Italians (3:02.75) and the Australians (3:25.43) remained below their previous records.
