the proposal to remove President Ramaphosa failed to win a majority in parliament

The impeachment procedure “is not going to advance”, declared the president of the Parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, after the vote of the legislators.

The vote has failed due to the refusal of many of the government party’s deputies to vote in favor even though the previous days there were differences within the pro-government African National Congress (ANC).

Deputies had to decide by a simple majority whether to go ahead with the impeachment procedure for the 70-year-old president.

Ramaphosa, who emerged as a champion of integrity after a corruption-tainted tenure with his predecessor, Jacob Zuma, is accused of concealing the theft of a significant amount of cash from one of his properties.

Last week, the leadership of the CNA had anticipated that its legislators would vote against it to guarantee the continuity of Ramaphosa, despite the conclusions of the independent commission, which found indications of responsibility in the president.

The commission’s report determined that Ramaphosa had committed four serious violations of the anti-corruption law and that there was prima facie evidence against him, according to local media reports.

Parliament’s decision comes after Ramaphosa also announced that he will seek a new mandate at the head of the formation after receiving an “unequivocal message” of support at the end of the meeting held by his party regarding the latest economic scandals that hit your image.
