Corona forecast expects a slight increase in hospital patients

The experts of the Covid prognosis consortium expect a slight increase in both the normal care area and the intensive care area. The number of cases is still rising slightly. In the age group of five to 14-year-olds, however, the positive tests are declining significantly, according to the experts.

In the past two weeks, the seven-day incidence in this group has fallen from over 300 to 200. In the past two waves, the development in the other age groups typically followed the development of the five to 14-year-olds with a delay of a few weeks, the experts analyzed.

6,751 new infections on Tuesday

On Tuesday, 6,751 new infections with the corona virus were registered in Austria, 916 of them in Upper Austria. According to AGES, an average of 4,831 infections were detected every day in the past week. As of Wednesday morning, there were 1,147 infected people in the hospital, an increase of 61 compared to the previous day. Of these, 61 are in intensive care, two fewer than yesterday.

14 corona deaths were reported on Tuesday. However, there are always delays in the reports. In the past week, 39 people have died after a corona infection. The pandemic has so far claimed 21,286 lives in Austria. There are currently 49,622 laboratory-confirmed active cases, 3,252 more than the day before. The seven-day incidence in Austria is currently 374.5 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 375.9 the day before.

Load a year ago many times higher

According to the two-week forecast for the hospitals, 853 to 1,374 infected people are expected on the normal wards by the forecast calculators across Austria on December 28, with an average of 1,083 occupied beds. Yesterday, Tuesday, 1,023 infected people were in normal wards. The intensive care occupancy is expected at the end of December with 47 to 93 seriously ill, the average is 66 intensive care patients. The day before, 63 seriously ill corona infected people had been treated in the home intensive care units.

A year ago, the intensive care units were even more severely affected by corona infections. 556 seriously ill people were treated in ICUs across Austria. There were also 1,655 patients on normal wards who tested positive.
