December 8: Unlocking no longer pays

December 8: Unlocking no longer pays

There is only one long Saturday left for retailers in the Innviertel to do “good” Christmas business. Time to draw a short interim balance. Above all, the long Advent weekend from Thursday, December 8th, should have boosted business again. The OÖN asked the cities in the Ried, Braunau and Schärding districts how business was going.

“There are still many shops in Ried that are run by their owners. The customers are not known by number, but by name. This is valued more than it used to be. In the city center there are gifts for all age categories and for every budget. Selling with the Rieder Schwanthaler tens is going very well. Companies in particular buy this currency as a gift for their employees,” says Michael Gärner from the Rieder merchant team. The fact that the city can manage without large Christmas lights this year has not had a negative impact on sales. “I had a bit of a stomach ache at the beginning, but the customer doesn’t come to Ried because of the festive lighting,” says Chairman Gärner.

The Weberzeile shopping center is satisfied with the course of business. “The third weekend in Advent is usually one of the busiest shopping days of the year. This year there was the special constellation of the calendar that many customers used the window day on Friday to shop in addition to December 8th. The visitor frequency was well distributed and made relaxed shopping with high frequency possible,” says center manager Christoph Vormair, summing up the course of business in the third week of Advent. The book and toy trade as well as the electronics industry were particularly satisfied. But the textile and sports sectors also benefited from the cold temperatures and the onset of winter.

Smartphones, warm winter jackets and shoes, ski clothing, alpine skis and ski accessories were in particularly high demand.

“We’re not a very big shopping city. On December 8, only a few shops were open. On that day, many people go to Passau because all the shops there are open. In general, however, Christmas business isn’t going badly in Altheim. And you can tell from the Crisis not too much yet. People aren’t skimping on Christmas presents yet. However, it is still to be feared that the numbers as they were before the Corona crisis will not quite be reached, but we certainly don’t need to be miserable,” says Alexander Huber, chairman of the city marketing in Altheim, the course of business to date.

Christmas is not saved

In Schärding, too, people are satisfied with the first three shopping Saturdays. On December 8, the big Perchten Run dominates the city, when people only stream into the city center in the evening hours. “We are a small town with a large variety of shops. There are also many things in Schärding that you cannot buy online. It is also evident that personal advice is valued more than it used to be. People save on gifts not really. Everyone wants to make their loved ones’ wishes come true at Christmas. Perhaps they’re more likely to save on short vacations or other purchases,” says Sandra Hofbauer from “SchärdingINNOVATIVE”.

In Braunau, too, the merchants see the previous shopping Saturdays as positive. “However, the importance is already decreasing from year to year, this trend is continuing. However, the comparison with the lockdown years is extremely difficult. It is noticeable that many consumers are now already doing their Christmas shopping in November. Many are probably afraid in front of the long supply chains. I definitely see things positively, last year we had a lockdown during half of the Christmas business. It will probably get really exciting after the turn of the year,” analyzes Stefan Ammerer, chairman of the Braunau merchant team.

The three previous shopping Saturdays have also gone surprisingly well in Mattighofen. December 8 has completely lost its attractiveness. “There is now an escape in the direction of Salzburg. In Mattighofen, many shops are no longer open because sales have dropped drastically. The large construction sites are currently a bit of a hindrance. Many parking spaces are no longer available, which is why many consumers no longer drive in In the direction of the town square, however, we are glad that we can be open all the time, everything else is whining at a high level,” says Günther Ringeltaube from the Mattighofen merchant team.
