The alarm went in shortly after 5 p.m.: A taxi occupied by two people had fallen over the quay wall into the ice-cold water in Ennshafen for reasons that are still unclear. The passenger – a sailor – was able to free himself from the sinking car. He was hypothermic, but apparently survived the accident unharmed.
Any help came too late for the 60-year-old driver. When the emergency services arrived in Ennshafen after a few minutes, the taxi was no longer to be seen. Divers from the fire department located the car lying on the roof at a depth of about three meters. To do this, they had to fight their way through the ice water in poor visibility. The car was pulled out of the water by a crane, but the emergency doctor could only determine the man’s death.
The Enns, Ennsdorf and St. Pantaleon fire brigades were deployed with three divers, an emergency doctor and the Red Cross and the police. Investigations into the course of the accident are currently underway, the police said in an interview with the Upper Austria News.
