It is not just the uncertainty of the energy supply and the wave of inflation that are causing problems for companies at the moment. “A lack of or unambitious climate protection measures also damage Austria as a business location,” said the environmental protection organizations WWF and Global 2000 in a joint appeal to the federal government, which was supported by 160 companies with a total turnover of 22 billion euros and 87,000 employees.
The companies, including the food retailer REWE, the banking group Erste Group, the energy supplier Verbund and the furniture group Ikea, are demanding a mandatory phase-out path for fossil fuels. In addition, the companies are demanding an energy saving program and a climate protection law for a “crisis-proof energy future” in the broadcast.
Expensive dependency
“Important decisions have been overdue for years so that companies can invest efficiently and deal better with market risks,” said WWF spokesman Karl Schellmann in yesterday’s broadcast. Further inaction would lead to expensive dependencies on oil and gas.
