We have bratwurst on Christmas Eve

Christmas is undeniably the day of the year most closely associated with food traditions. The most popular dish is raclette, according to a survey commissioned by Iglo. For almost a quarter it is a fixed point on Christmas Eve and is particularly popular with 30 to 39 year olds.

For one in five people, the cold platter is the dish of choice, fondue, sausages, fish or goose are also often found at the dining table. In some federal states there are particularly strong traditions: in Upper Austria, every second person at Christmas has to have a bratwurst. In Salzburg, almost half eat soup, in Styria, a third have a cold plate at the table at Christmas. In the federal capital, on the other hand, there is often fish: 37 percent of Viennese like to eat salmon or carp.

The most traditional eaters in a comparison of the federal states can be found in Tyrol, where 63 percent always serve the same dish. The people in Burgenland are the most flexible when it comes to Christmas dinner.
