The 42-year-old from Salzburg had to admit defeat to local hero Roland Fischnaller of the same age in an “oldie” final. For the South Tyrolean it was the 20th World Cup victory, Prommegger celebrated his 50th individual podium finish in the World Cup.
With the third-best qualifying time, Prommegger easily qualified for the knockout phase. There he first defeated the Italian Daniele Bagozza before eliminating his compatriot Fabian Obmann in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Zan Kosir from Slovenia had no chance. In the final run, the man from Salzburg had to admit defeat to Fischnaller by 13/100 seconds. Third place went to Aaron March from Italy.
“It went great right from the start, I really drove down to the limit in every final run. I don’t have to regret the 13/100 against ‘Fisch’, it was a perfect day,” Prommegger said happily. “I’ve never been on the podium in Cortina, normally I don’t like the flat part at all, I was fast there today. It just works.” The 42-year-old is further ahead in the PGS World Cup and has also taken the lead in the overall World Cup.
In the final, the chairman finished seventh, directly ahead of Benjamin Karl, who also made it to the quarter-finals. Karl defeated his teammate Alexander Payer in the round of 16, Payer finished tenth. Arvid Auner was 17th and missed the round of 16 by only 2/100.
Schöffmann and Ulbing failed in the round of 16
The women’s competition did not go according to plan. Sabine Schöffmann and Daniela Ulbing failed in the round of 16 and finished twelfth and 13th, Claudia Riegler was already stuck in the qualification. Victory went to Slovenia’s Gloria Kotnik, who prevailed in the final against Germany’s Ramona Hofmeister. For Kotnik it was the first World Cup victory.
After the Christmas break, the home races in Bad Gastein are next on the agenda for the new year.
