EU Parliament President: “No justification” for Austria’s veto

This must finally take place in 2023, which the EU Parliament must also insist on. The Schengen expansion remains “essential”, especially since migration is a topic that boils over in Europe, especially during election campaigns, Metsola continued.

Bucharest. Romania’s President Klaus Johannis, for his part, made it clear at the joint press conference with Metsola that the “unity of the European Union” should by no means be jeopardized again. The EU cannot afford another “failure” of this kind. When asked by journalists about the extraordinary EU summit in February on the subject of migration, Johannis explained that he did not expect anything from it in terms of Schengen expansion – on the one hand because it was “still too early”, on the other hand because the Schengen matter not on the agenda.

Following the meeting and press conference with Romania’s head of state, the President of the European Parliament also met with Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca (Liberal Party/PNL) and the Presidents of the two chambers of Parliament, Marcel Ciolacu (Socialists/PSD) and Alina Gorghiu (PNL). Her program also included a speech to the Romanian legislature. Metsola had scheduled her first-ever visit to Romania hours after Austria vetoed the country’s entry into the Schengen area.
