Researchers discovered evidence three years ago that high doses of cholesterol-lowering statins impair bone quality in mice. Scientists from the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) and the Medical University of Vienna have now demonstrated this for the first time in a study. The results could now have implications for future treatments.
“This is the first study to demonstrate the link between high doses of statins and osteoporosis in mice,” says Peter Klimek, head of the data analysis team at CSH and one of the study’s authors.
“Our results inevitably raise concern that osteoporosis may occur as a possible side effect of high statin doses and call for monitoring of bone metabolism in such patients,” the study authors said. However, the treatment of high cholesterol must be the top priority.
