Between August and November, natural gas consumption in the EU fell by a fifth compared to the average consumption in the same periods last year since 2017. According to the statistics authority Eurostat, there were big differences between the member states: While Finland consumed around 53 percent less gas, gas consumption in Malta increased by seven percent. According to Eurostat, 18 out of 27 countries saved 15 percent or more gas. As reported, the EU and the member states have voluntarily set themselves this goal in the gas emergency plan.
In Austria, because of the high fuel prices, cars have hardly been driven less recently, but they have been a little slower. This is the result of a study commissioned by the ÖAMTC motoring club. Anonymized mobile phone data was evaluated for this purpose. The slight decrease in kilometers driven compared to 2019 is due to corona quarantine and home office and less to fuel prices, says Bernhard Wiesinger, head of the ÖAMTC interest group.
Higher fees despite help
The regulator E-Control announced higher network fees for electricity and gas in 2023 – despite state aid. Part of the network costs are influenced by market prices. In the first half of the year, around 60 percent of the additional costs in the electricity grid are to be intercepted with a law. The federal government will make 260 million euros available for this.
