In order to promote natural diversity in the regions of Austria and to support sustainable species protection projects, the Nature Conservation Union together with the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection announced the Grand Prix of Biodiversity this year. The initiators of the around 70 sustainable projects were each awarded prize money of 5,000 euros from the biodiversity fund for their outstanding commitment. In the district of Vöcklabruck, among other things, a project to reintroduce stone crabs was implemented.
Whether due to the crayfish plague or the fragmentation of habitats due to the construction of rivers – the stone crab is endangered by many factors. As part of the Biodiversity Grand Prix, Pia Teufl and Samuel Auer took stone crabs from a healthy donor population and planted them in an untouched section of the Vöckla river. The potential habitat offers the best conditions for resettlement. Both acclimatization and reproduction are checked regularly.
Two other projects are running in the district of Vöcklabruck: one under the motto “Check night insect hedges”, initiated by the Attersee-Traunsee Nature Park Association in Steinbach, another bears the title “Blooming meadow and wild shrub hedge Au” under the aegis of Josef Holzinger, the “landlord in the Au” in Manning.
