“These people have great respect for old age”

“These people have great respect for old age”

They come from Africa, Asia or the Arab world and go to school together. In the new year, 34 people with a migration background will start their training to become specialist social workers at the Elderly Care School of the State of Upper Austria. Most of them are people entitled to asylum or subsidiary protection who hardly speak German and therefore have no prospect of a training place. In order to give them a perspective, the school relies on the expertise of the Linz association Arcobaleno. In a four-week intensive course, the prospective nurses are trained by experienced German trainers prepared for the two and a half year apprenticeship. One morning per week is also reserved for German training during the actual training. “The many different first languages are sometimes a certain one challenge in classbut we have the necessary experience and the feedback is very good“, says Anja Krohmer, Co-Managing Director of Arcobaleno.

Don’t do without future employees

with The old people’s care school is reacting to the strong demand with this offer. “We have a lot of interested women and men, but we notice that there are often problems with German,” says the director Wilhelmine Steinbacher-Mittermeir. In view of the shortage of staff in nursing, however, one does not want to do without these future employees. They are people like 29-year-old Muysal Koraisi from Afghanistan, who has been living in Austria for seven years. “I want to help people and later have a good job,” says the father of three, explaining his motivation. Learning German is already working very well. 44-year-old Olena Apatenko also reports progress. She comes from the Ukraine and was a media designer there. “I want to learn a new job,” she says. Ever since she started school, Deut has been doing italways better. “These people bring a high level of commitment and have a great interest and ambition in completing the training.”says Steinbacher-Mittermeir.

“Best Practice Example”

Due to the high demand, a second course was set up without further ado. There are already many inquiries for next year. In addition, a home help course for people with German as a second language is to be offered. Director Steinbacher-Mittermeir speaks of a successful model. Social Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP) sees “enormous potential” for the care sector. Such projects are best practice examples of functioning integration measures. “On the one hand, they follow our integration guideline German and work, at the same time, a benefit is created for our society by inspiring and preparing people for the nursing profession,” says Hattmannsdorfer to the OÖN.

respect for old age

Krohmer brings another aspect into play: “In our courses and language cafés, we notice that people with migration experience often have a great deal of respect for old age. They inherited that from their extended families.” Multilingualism is also an advantage, because many of the people to be cared for in the future do not only speak German.

project “migrant care”

The “migrants care” project of Volkshilfe Oberösterreich is pursuing a similar goal to the cooperation between Arcobaleno and the school for the care of the elderly. People whose native language is not German are prepared for the various training opportunities in the field of nursing and caregiving, in particular home help training. The project is to be further expanded in the coming year.
