“We will support the return of Venezuela to Mercosur; they had not yet met some requirements, these are legal requirements,” Vieira said in an interview with the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo.

Support for Venezuela and reopening of the embassy

Venezuela was suspended from Mercosur in December 2016 following a political crisis in the Caribbean nation, although its formal accession had not been completed then.

The announcement was accompanied by confirmation that President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will send, once he takes office on January 1, a chargé d’affaires to resume relations between the two countries and then appoint an ambassador.

“There is no reason not to have an ambassador in Venezuela, you cannot turn your back because the country has a government with a different orientation, especially a neighboring country, with a 2,000-kilometer border in the Amazon,” commented scallop

On the 14th of this month, Vieira had already anticipated that Brazil will resume diplomatic relations with that country, recognizing Nicolás Maduro as president.

“The president-elect instructed me to reestablish relations with Venezuela,” Vieira said on that occasion during a press conference, in which he also ratified that the Lula government will recognize Maduro as president and no longer the opposition Juan Guaidó.

Vieira also said that the next government will support Bolivia’s formal entry into the bloc, which the Brazilian Congress has yet to approve, according to the Sputnik news agency.

“Without a doubt the government will support it, the expansion of Mercosur is important,” he claimed.

The government of President Jair Bolsonaro suspended diplomatic relations with Venezuela in 2019 and ignored Maduro’s re-election in 2018.

Vieira also clarified that Lula does not plan to travel “in the short term” to Venezuela, Nicaragua or Cuba.

Uruguay’s position

For his part, the chancellor of Uruguay, Francisco Bustillowas favorable to the search for sectoral agreements between Mercosur and China, despite the fact that his country already has “a path outlined” for a bilateral treaty with that country.

“Everything in which the word agreements is impregnated seems fantastic to us, I think it is very good to move forward with China as with any other country,” Bustillo expressed at a press conference, according to the Uruguayan Public Media Portal.

When asked about the Uruguayan position regarding the intention recently expressed by Vieira that the next Brazilian government promote sectoral agreements between Mercosur and China, Bustillo said that it seems to him something “very good.”

“In no way do we rule out agreements on the way of another type or level,” he said.
