Around 1,000 employees at six airports took part in the walkout. The public service union (PCS) had called for this. It is the first of eight planned strikes by the end of the year – there will be no strike on December 27th. The London airports Heathrow and Gatwick were affected, as well as Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow and Manchester. The strike by staff at the airport follows strikes by nursing staff and emergency services in recent days. Train and bus workers in London are also planning to lay down their jobs over the Christmas period. The post office went on strike again on Friday. Workers are all fighting for higher wages in a country where inflation has now reached nearly 11 percent. Some salaries have stagnated for years.
PCS General Secretary Mark Serwotka reported that tens of thousands of border police workers could not afford the high cost of living despite working. For example, they depend on the food banks. In addition to higher wages, the demands also include improvements in pensions and job security.
The government justifies its offer of a two percent increase in wages for civil servants with the need to keep inflation under control. If wages are increased, there is a risk of a wage-price spiral.
