Police give tips against cybercrime

The trend is continuing: in 2022, too, there was an increase in reports of internet fraud, the State Criminal Police Office of Upper Austria announced in a broadcast. “Especially the ‘daughter/son scams’ have skyrocketed,” says police spokeswoman Kerstin Hinterecker in an interview with OÖN. That’s why the executive advises caution over the holidays and gives tips so that you don’t get taken in by internet scammers.

1 | “Hello mum!”: Anyone who receives suspicious messages from what they believe to be relatives urgently asking for money should contact the relatives on the known telephone number. Money transfers are strongly discouraged.

2 | Bargain: In times of rising prices, the internet lures people with cheap offers. The police advise not to place orders under time pressure and to be particularly careful with transfers to foreign accounts. A look at the imprint and a short search on the Internet with the keywords “fraud” or “scam” can help to check the authenticity of an online shop. You can find a list of fraudulent fake shops at www.watchlist-internet.at

3 | data theft: Fraudsters are on the hunt for private data, also known as phishing. Fake e-mails or messages about a parcel delivery are intended to induce their publication. Spelling and grammatical errors are suspicious. Links sent to register for online banking may not be used under any circumstances.

4 | Account Lock: In order to minimize the damage in the event of fraud, the blocking hotline of your own bank should be stored in your cell phone.
