Schärding and the vortex after the storm

Franz Angerer completed what “Kyrill” had started: when the winter storm swept across large parts of Europe in January 2007, it also damaged the building of the former Wieninger brewery in Schärding. So much so that the Mayor at the time, Angerer (VP), as the building authority of first instance, decided that the so-called “Grömerhaus” would have to be demolished to a large extent because of “imminent danger”.

Too hasty, as the Federal Monuments Office soon let him know. Like the entire old town of Schärding, the building was a listed building. The Federal Monuments Office submitted an application for restoration to the responsible district authority just one month after the hurricane. This is possible through a “complete copy”, it said. The lifting of the monument protection was rejected. “It is incomprehensible that one wants to continue to place a pile of bricks under monument protection,” said the mayor at the time.

The argument turned into a long-running dispute. In Schärding, the former Wieninger brewery was only called “the eyesore” until the light switched from red to green in November 2010: the Federal Monuments Office finally approved the renewed reconstruction plans.

“Compromise Found”

The restoration should be limited exclusively to the external appearance, inside there should be free design space.

The construction period for the “Wieningerstraße 3” project was one and a half years, 19 condominiums, a shop and four offices were built on five floors. “There were many different proposals back then. In the end, a compromise was found between all those involved,” says Schärding’s current mayor, Günter Streicher (SP).
