The Christmas Gospel to read aloud

But it happened in those days that Emperor Augustus issued the order to enter the whole world in tax lists. This record was the first; at that time Quirinius was governor of Syria. So everyone went to his town to be registered. So also Joseph went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem; for he was of the house and lineage of David. He wanted to be registered with Maria, his fiancee, who was expecting a child. It came to pass while they were there, the days were fulfilled for her to give birth, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in diapers and put him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn.

In this area shepherds camped in the open fields and kept watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord came to them, and the glory of the Lord shone about them, and they were greatly afraid. The angel said to them, Fear not, for, behold, I bring you news of great joy, which shall be for all the people: Today a Savior has been born to you in the city of David; he is the Christ the Lord. And this shall serve as a sign to you: You will find a child wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a great army from heaven praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men in whom he is pleased.

And it came to pass, when the angels had returned from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go to Bethlehem to see the event which the Lord has made known to us! So they hurried and found Mary and Joseph and the child lying in the manger. When they saw it, they related the word that had been spoken to them about this child. And all who heard it marveled at what the shepherds told them. But Mary kept all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for what they had heard and seen, just as they had been told. (Luke 2:1-21)
