Is this the highest Christmas tree in the country?

It is an extraordinary Christmas story that was recently written in lofty heights on the border between Upper Austria and Styria – and, according to the protagonists, at the same time the very first of its kind: A Christmas tree shone from the summit of the Hoher Dachstein, decorated with a chain of lights and flanked by three alpinists in Santa Claus costume.

“Sign of Peace”

The footage made waves on social media. But how does a Christmas tree with a light of peace get there at 2,995 meters above sea level? Mountain guide Paul Sodamin, Youtuber Franz Althuber (Alpine Moments) and alpinist Markus Grießner are behind the complex undertaking.

Disguised as Santa Clauses, they pulled the tree from the mountain station of the Südwandbahn – past astonished tourists – over the glacier and through the Randkluftsteig to the summit. From there it should “shine as a sign of peace throughout the country and beyond,” Althuber describes the background to the campaign on his YouTube channel.
