Search for two people who were buried in an avalanche

The assumption that 10 people were buried in the avalanche was based on a video of a person showing “how skiers come into contact with the avalanche,” Hermann Fercher of the Lech/Zürs tourist office told APA.

Evacuation

One of those rescued was injured and was airlifted to a hospital in Innsbruck. Another was injured but was able to free himself and go to another hospital, regional security adviser Christian Gantner told APA.

Six other people seen in the video were uninjured. The fate of the last two people is unknown, according to APA.

Lech/Zürs is promoted as “one of the best ski areas in the world” and part of the cradle of alpine skiing. The latest entry on ski conditions on the resort’s website warns of “considerable danger of avalanches.”

The resort’s website said the ski area was closed from 5:00 p.m. local time (1600 GMT) on Sunday and that there would be an update on skiing at 8:00 a.m. (0700 GMT) on Monday. A spokesman for the station could not immediately be reached. (Written by Paul Carrel; Edited in Spanish by Ricardo Figueroa).

Caveat

The rescue services warned over the weekend of the risk of avalanches in the area and in neighboring Tyrol, pointing out the fragility of the snow cover in a context of temperate climate.

In recent years, snowslides have left an average of twenty deaths a year in Austria.
