Faced with an unprecedented wave of infections, China stops disseminating statistics on covid-19

Despite the admission of densely populated cities of enormous economic importance such as Shanghai about contagion levels of more than a million people per day, the entity did not give any explanation, but these statistics no longer reflected the unprecedented wave of infections that is hitting the country since the strict sanitary measures of the “zero covid” policy were relaxed on December 7.

Before, PCR tests, which were almost mandatory, made it possible to reliably follow the trend of the epidemic. Now, infected people take tests at home and usually do not report the results to the authorities, which makes it impossible to have reliable figures.

“From now on, we will no longer publish daily data on the epidemic,” the National Health Commission said yesterday.

The entity added that the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will publish information on the epidemic, aimed at having references and research, but without specifying what data or the frequency of the counts.

The Chinese, who found that there was a discrepancy between the level of infections in their environment and the statistics, received the announcement with sarcasm.

critics

“They finally woke up and realize they can’t fool people” with underestimated numbers, wrote one Weibo user. “It was about time,” says another person. Another netizen celebrated the news by stating that “it was the largest office for manufacturing false statistics in the country.”

Another controversy that discredited official statistics was the new methodology imposed, according to which only people who died directly from respiratory failure linked to the virus were counted.

Since the restrictions were lifted, the Chinese authorities have only officially reported six deaths from covid.

Many crematoriums have reported an unusually high influx of corpses in recent days. A situation that has been largely ignored by the Chinese media, but which the authorities have begun to mention.

The great metropolis of Canton (south), with a population of 19 million, announced the postponement of funeral ceremonies until “after January 10.”

“If it is decided (by the families) not to organize a farewell ceremony, then the body can be cremated directly as in normal times,” the municipal government specified.

An earlier version of the statement invoked “a significant volume of recent activity” to justify the move. However, the mention was subsequently withdrawn, as the authorities wish to give the image of a situation under control.

System

Many hospitals are under pressure due to the increase in patients with covid and the shortage of medicines against fever.

Some local governments began to present estimates of the extent of the epidemic.

The health authorities of Zhejiang (east), south of Shanghai, indicated that the number of daily infections now exceeds the million barrier in this province, of about 65 million people.

In Qingdao, a city of 10 million inhabitants in the east of the country, half a million infections were registered daily, according to a municipal health officer quoted by the official press.

In Beijing, “a large number of infected people” were notified on Saturday and asked to “do everything possible” to improve the situation and reduce the mortality rate.
